How many high school students actually have a conversation with their guidance counselor about apprenticeship programs available to them after they graduate? The answer is probably "not many."
And that’s unfortunate because manufacturing is alive and well in the United States and apprenticeship programs offer a clear path to good paying jobs -- jobs that too often go unfilled due to a lack of skilled workers.
Hudson is set to train the next generation.

We kicked off the legislative season with Manufacturing Days at the Capitol on February 4-5, 2013. The briefings and legislative visits were the focus of activities. The event included a meeting and press event with the Governor where he promoted the elimination of the sales tax on manufacturing machinery and equipment as one of his two priorities for the 2013 Legislative Session.

The Senate Commerce & Tourism Committee passed SB 518 by Senator Hukill today on Manufacturing Sales Tax Exemption unanimously with an amendment supported by MAF that corrected some issues with the original bill. Some 25 individuals/companies stood in support of the bill today. That was an awesome showing!!!

There is a skilled labor shortage in manufacturing. It is an immediate and long-term challenge. It is a local, state and national problem. We could talk about the whys and point fingers, but what would be the point? Locally, we are long past the discussion phase and into the action phase. Be advised, our community is on it. We are harnessing every resource available to us and continue to seek solutions.
